== Troubleshooting == | |||
If you are experiencing issues with your {{PAGENAME}}, the following troubleshooting tips may help. If not, PIKO technical support can be contacted with the information below.
===== If the locomotive is unresponsive and the headlight is off: =====
*Make sure the "mode selection" switch under the fuel load in the tender is flipped to the expected power source.
*If you are running on battery power, make sure that the 'AA' batteries are fully charged.
*Also make sure that the battery clip is plugged into the JST connector in the tender.
===== If the radio control is acting erratic or the playable whistle is no longer playable: =====
*Replace the CR2025 battery in the pocket remote.
*The CR2025 battery in the pocket remote is low if the the red light blinks instead of staying on solid when a button is held.
*Make sure the 'AA' batteries are fully charged. 2800mAh NiMH rechargeable batteries give superior performance compared with standard alkaline batteries. An 18.5V 3400 milliamp-hour rechargeable lithium battery pack will give even better performance than the 'AA" rechargeables.
*Make sure that the voltage selection switch on the PIKO R/C receiver board is set to position two (2).
===== Head light is on but the locomotive does not make sound: =====
*After about 15 minutes of inactivity, the locomotive will mute itself. Any R/C or DCC input will wake the locomotive.
*Make sure the decoder is "unmuted" using the volume stepper button underneath the tender water fill hatch or F8 on your DCC controller.

Overview
PIKO’s new Tri-mode sound and smoke equipped Mogul locomotive features a TCS WOWSound® decoder with factory-preset configuration compatible with operation on DC, DCC, or Battery R/C. The WOWSound® steam locomotive sound package uses authentic sound files recorded from the prototype for sounds such as whistle, bell, chuffs, air compressor, dynamo generator, blower, coupler close/release, brake release, brake application, and many more! Factory battery R/C operation uses (10) AA rechargeable cells and provides pre-programmed buttons to control speed, direction, horn, and bell with the PIKO Pocket Remote.
In an industry first, the Tri-mode Mogul locomotive from PIKO brings premium sound and three modes of operation to your large scale layout!

DC mode operation
For DC mode operation, ensure that the switch under the fuel load in the tender is set to "track." When operating in DC mode, the locomotive will sit still and silent until a sufficient track voltage is present. Once the minimum voltage (approximately 12 volts) is met, the idling sounds and the lights will come on. Further increasing the voltage will cause the locomotive to begin to move. Please note that the PIKO Tri-Mode Mogul - G is wired opposite of NMRA standard polarity for compatibility with legacy large scale models. If you would like to change the behavior of your locomotive on DC power, please read more in our section on DC Mode Operation and Configuration for WOWSound Version 5.
Automatic Sounds
Once the locomotive starts moving, a directional whistle blast will sound and the bell will activate automatically. Increasing the voltage further will shut off the automatic bell. The directional horn blasts and automatic DC mode bell are enabled by default.
Reed Switch Sensor
The PIKO Tri-Mode Mogul - G includes a sensor (reed switch assembly) to trigger bell and grade crossing quill sounds when the loco passes over track magnets (such as PIKO #35268, available separately). Rotating the track magnet 180 degrees will either trigger the bell for about 8 seconds or a short grade crossing whistle signal.
DCC operation
DCC operation requires the switch under the fuel load in the tender to be set to "track." As soon as the locomotive is placed on the track, the idling sounds will come on immediately and the locomotive will respond to DCC commands addressed to the factory-default address three (3). Please see the table below for the default button mappings.
Audio Assist®
PIKO Tri-Mode Mogul - G features TCS Audio Assist® for quick and easy programming without CVs. Audio Assist can be used to customize the programming of your decoder, including changing sound volumes, remapping sounds, adding lighting effects, and so much more! Please see the Audio Assist® page for more information.
Rotate
TCS' rotate feature makes it possible to change the currently selected whistle, bell, or chuff sounds with a single button. The rotate feature is available on F5 of PIKO Tri-Mode Mogul - G. Sound choices made on DCC also remain in effect on DC or Battery R/C operation. Please see WOWSound Rotate Feature for more information.
Momentum Function
The momentum function is a quick and easy way to change the momentum of the decoder. There are two modes present, which are toggled with every press of the momentum function (F9 on PIKO Tri-Mode Mogul - G) "Switching Momentum" and "Mainline momentum." When the Momentum button is pressed the decoder will announce what momentum mode it is in. Please see Diesel Version 5:Momentum Function for more information on the momentum feature.
R/C operation
For easy battery R/C operation, insert (10) AA rechargeable cells (not included) into the battery clip under the fuel load in the tender. Ensure that the switch below the battery clip is set to "battery." When operating in R/C mode, idling sounds and lights will come on as soon as the switch is set to "battery." Pressing the "up" or "down" arrows on the included PIKO pocket remote will cause the locomotive to move in the requested direction. Further presses, or holding the button will cause a more rapid speed change. The "I" button will toggle the bell on or off. The "II" button activates the playable whistle. Pressing both directional arrows at once will activate the emergency stop. For best performance, we suggesting using a 18.5V 3400 milliamp-hour rechargeable lithium battery pack, which is available from various large scale retailers pre-wired with a compatible "JST" style connector.
Pushbutton Volume Stepper
Volume is adjustable in R/C mode with a simple pushbutton "stepper" volume control located beneath the water fill hatch at the rear of the tender. Each press of this button increases the volume by 25 percent. Once the volume reaches 100 percent, the next press will mute the decoder before cycling back to 25 percent volume.
Smoke
Prior to turning on the smoke feature of your PIKO Tri-Mode Mogul - G, the smoke unit must be filled with compatible smoke fluid (such as PIKO #36210, available separately). Running the smoke unit without smoke fluid may cause damage to the locomotive. Smoke is controlled by a slide switch located beneath the water fill hatch at the rear of the tender. Smoke will come on automatically in DC and R/C modes when the slide switch is in the "on" position. In DCC mode, smoke may be controlled with F6 only when the slide switch is in the "on" position.

Troubleshooting
If you are experiencing issues with your PIKO Tri-Mode Mogul - G, the following troubleshooting tips may help. If not, PIKO technical support can be contacted with the information below.
If the locomotive is unresponsive and the headlight is off:
- Make sure the "mode selection" switch under the fuel load in the tender is flipped to the expected power source.
- If you are running on battery power, make sure that the 'AA' batteries are fully charged.
- Also make sure that the battery clip is plugged into the JST connector in the tender.
If the radio control is acting erratic or the playable whistle is no longer playable:
- Replace the CR2025 battery in the pocket remote.
- The CR2025 battery in the pocket remote is low if the the red light blinks instead of staying on solid when a button is held.
- Make sure the 'AA' batteries are fully charged. 2800mAh NiMH rechargeable batteries give superior performance compared with standard alkaline batteries. An 18.5V 3400 milliamp-hour rechargeable lithium battery pack will give even better performance than the 'AA" rechargeables.
- Make sure that the voltage selection switch on the PIKO R/C receiver board is set to position two (2).
Head light is on but the locomotive does not make sound:
- After about 15 minutes of inactivity, the locomotive will mute itself. Any R/C or DCC input will wake the locomotive.
- Make sure the decoder is "unmuted" using the volume stepper button underneath the tender water fill hatch or F8 on your DCC controller.
